Improving Access, Expanding Opportunity

CodeFWD is a free online program for US teachers and non-profits working with 4th through 8th graders that uses videos and other activities to inspire interest in the field of computer programming.Facebook created CodeFWD to expand access and participation in computer programming to students from underrepresented groups. By unlocking the power of computer programming for those who may currently not have access, we hope to inspire a new generation of diverse tech innovators to build a future that benefits us all.

Through this program, students learn:

  • Computer programming fundamentals
    • CodeFWD offers students the opportunity to discover what computer programming and coding are
  • The power of computer programming
    • CodeFWD shares how programmers and their unique perspectives shape things we use every day—from apps to fashion, sports, music and more
  • Block-based coding
    • Students learn the basic concepts behind coding with hands-on exercises
  • Basic control structures
    • Students learn about important blocks of programming that enable computers to perform repetitive tasks quickly and efficiently

Program facilitators must be credentialed teachers or staff members of a 501(c)3 organization. To participate, they:

  • Watch a short video
    • This provides the information they need to prepare a lesson plan that drives interest and motivates continued exploration in the field of computer programming
  • Facilitate an engaging classroom activity
    • The activity begins with a short video and ends with a series of questions designed to assess students’ understanding.
  • Lead a hands-on exercise
    • This opportunity is designed to test what their students have learned and put their newly discovered understanding of computer programming to work
